Description
If you missed the first GulfChat of the year, you can watch it on our YouTube Channel. Next month, we are excited to welcome Della Scott-Ireton, Associate
Director of Florida Public Archaeology Network at the University of West Florida.
Della will explore the rich maritime history of Northwest Florida through its shipwrecks. Her talk will highlight how these submerged sites from early colonial-era vessels to more recent wrecks offer important insights into trade, warfare, coastal life, and preservation challenges in the Gulf. Drawing on her extensive experience in public archaeology, she will also discuss how shipwrecks are documented, protected, and shared with the public as irreplaceable cultural resources.
This lecture complements the History Museum of Mobile’s current special exhibition, Sunken Treasures, Ancient Seas: Artifacts from the Deep on view right now until May 10th. The exhibition explores modern underwater archaeology through shipwrecks, ancient artifacts, and cutting-edge recovery methods, with a special focus on the Mediterranean Sea and the submerged landscapes of Sicily and the Italian coastline. Together, the lecture and exhibition offer a unique opportunity to explore underwater archaeology.
Parking is free on-site and museum admission is not required to attend GulfChats. For your convenience, you may pre-order lunch from Fresh Fruit Cafe located in the lobby of our museum by calling the restaurant at 251-277-1696. Feel free to browse the menu options here.
