Historic Oaklawn Outdoor Museum Celebration

Description

The public is invited to the Historic Oaklawn Outdoor Museum (HOM) Welcome Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Oaklawn Cemetery in Mobile. The event is hosted by One Simon Two Rubys & A Hamp, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the historic cemetery. The free event will honor well-known African Americans who helped shaped Mobile’s history, with descendants participating in the celebration. The program will also feature a special musical performance by the Excelsior Band, followed by self-guided tours of the outdoor museum. The Welcome Celebration marks the second phase of One Simon Two Rubys & A Hamp's Unearthing History, Renewing Community: Oaklawn Cemetery Preservation Initiative. Phase II expands the organization's original cemetery restoration efforts through the designation of Oaklawn Cemetery as an outdoor museum dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the extraordinary contributions of African Americans in Mobile and beyond.
