Alex Jerome Lofton II, known as Huggy Bear Da Poet, serves as Mobile's Poet Laureate and is widely recognized as a pioneer of the modern spoken-word movement along the Gulf Coast. A nationally acclaimed performer, he uses poetry to explore social justice, community, and the Black experience in America. The author of 'Love, Laughter, Heartache and Pain' and the spoken-word albums 'Where I Was' and 'New Growth', he also leads workshops and performances nationwide. Huggy Bear is a two-time Nappie Award winner (2023, 2025).
