Senior Accountant

Mission Contribution: Providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders by ensuring the accurate and timely reporting of the Donated Goods Retail (DGR) program's accounting while maintaining rigorous financial standards.

Function: To oversee general accounting, review financial activities related to Donated Goods Retail, and generate reports.

Essential Functions:

  1. Review and provide backup for the daily posting of Donated Goods sales transactions to the accounting software, including cash and A/R deposits. Report any discrepancies to management.
  2. Supervise the daily workflow and tasks of the Accounting Clerk I.
  3. Prepare and review activities and reports related to the Good Samaritan program.
  4. Possess proficiency in accounts payable processes, including the management of the check writing procedure, encompassing automated transactions, to serve as a capable backup when necessary.
  5. Prepare sales tax returns and handle sales tax-related issues.
  6. Prepare monthly lease invoices and journal entries related to leases, collaborating with the Director of Properties and Facilities to track updates and lease payments.
  7. Review monthly bank charges and credit card fees for accuracy and reconcile store bank accounts.
  8. Address financial issues with the Donated Goods Retail stores, including customer credit card transactions.
  9. Manage new goods inventory and related transactions.
  10. Collaborate with the Salvage Manager to maintain and track salvage sales and accounts receivable balances.
  11. Prepare journal entries related to Donated Goods Retail for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end.
  12. Provide training to store managers on accounting policies and procedures.
  13. Demonstrate knowledge of month-end closing processes and assist in the event of key staff absences.
  14. Conduct a monthly thorough review of general ledger accounts to ensure the accuracy of postings.
  15. Ensure timely and accurate preparation of all reports.
  16. Assist accounting management in preparing the annual budget, with a focus on Donated Goods Retail budget activities.
  17. Assist in preparing and reviewing functions related to the annual financial audit.
  18. Coordinate cash management procedures for special events and fundraising activities to ensure proper accounting.
  19. Ensure compliance with internal control procedures and agency accounting policies.
  20. Serve as a positive role model for employees in all aspects of professional performance.
  21. Follow safety procedures and personnel policies, ensuring compliance by accounting staff.
  22. Maintain regular attendance as outlined in Goodwill Gulf Coast's attendance policy.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned.


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Ability to interact cordially and productively with various individuals.

Proficiency in marketing Goodwill Gulf Coast and explaining its mission to the public.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

General knowledge of filing and accounting department functions.

Proficiency in using general office equipment, including computers, copy machines, calculators, voice mail systems, facsimile machines, and postage machines.

Accurate touch typing skills, including numbers.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of personnel, trainee/client, payroll, financial, and agency information.

Proficiency in reading, writing, and clear communication in English.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with occasional stress.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, occasionally including nights and weekends and hours in excess of 40 per week as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for at least 3 years, liability automobile insurance and be insurable through the agency’s insurance carrier.
  •   Must be at least 21 years of age.



Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting and one to three years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in a non-profit environment is helpful but not required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, including Word, Excel, and all Microsoft Office software.
  • Experience working with accounting software is required. 

 

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to use hands, fingers and wrists, repetitively while using computer keyboard.

Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.

Ability to engage in bending, stretching, twisting and stooping.

  • Corrected vision within normal limits.

 

Working Conditions: Adequately lighted and ventilated building.

  • Timeliness, accuracy, and adherence to standards regarding reports and other financial information.
  • Successful completion of financial audits.
